General Overview of this Thesis

Abstract

The opioid epidemic is a widespread issue throughout the United States, affecting everyone from elderly adults to babies with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Opioids are drugs intended to help alleviate chronic pain, but these medications have highly addictive properties that can create opioid receptors in the brain, make misuse tempting, and cause a fatal overdose. Millions of people are using and becoming addicted to opioid drugs, many of whose path to drug dependence begins with a opioid prescription for chronic pain. Our society faces a serious, growing issue pertaining to these drugs, leaving individuals addicted or withdrawn and families shattered in the wreckage.
